Course Description:

In order to apply for the Local Anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Certification in Arizona, dental hygienists must successfully complete coursework that includes didactic and clinical components in block and infiltration techniques, along with nitrous oxide analgesia administration. At the successful conclusion of the course, participants will be eligible to test for the Anesthesia Examination administered by Western Regional Examining Board (WREB).

Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine Faculty will provide a comprehensive on-line, lecture and clinical laboratory course, teaching concepts and clinical techniques for the administration of local anesthetic agents and nitrous oxide. Experience includes medical history review, electronic recordkeeping, patient management, and hands-on practice administering local anesthetics and nitrous oxide in a clinical setting. Class limited to 30 participants.

Method:  Didactic studies will include an 80-hour online self-study course monitored by a dedicated MWU College of Dental Medicine – Arizona full-time faculty.  Progress evaluations will include weekly quizzes, midterm, and final exams. Hands-on clinical portion of the course will include a three (3) day (24 hour) local anesthesia and nitrous oxide analgesia clinic.  Hands-on instruction will include proper assembly and disassembly of anesthesia and nitrous oxide armamentarium and safe and proper administration techniques.

All supplies, materials, and equipment are included in the course fee. Lunch will be provided.

Three-day clinic will conclude with a simulated clinical competency exam where participants will be tested on anesthesia injections required by the WREB anesthesia certification exam.  This course is designed to fulfill all the necessary requirements in order for the participants to sit for both the WREB written and hands-on dental hygiene anesthesia exams.

Participants are grouped in pairs and will administer local anesthesia per the following sequence: maxillary infiltration and blocks followed by mandibular blocks. Participants will also administer nitrous oxide on each other. Please Note: Participants unable to receive anesthesia and nitrous oxide for medical reasons will need to provide a substitute patient for the clinic sessions.

All participants are required to sign MWU CDMA "REQUEST AND CONSENT FOR LOCAL ANESTHESIA INJECTIONS AND NITRIOUS OXIDE ANALGESIA".

Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Provide a thorough review of head and neck anatomy,
  2. Demonstrate local anesthesia techniques,
  3. Administer nitrous oxide analgesia,
  4. Describe, identify, and treat medical emergencies associated with injections and nitrous oxide administration, and
  5. Adequately prepare for the WREB examination in local anesthesia.

This course meets the licensure requirements in all WREB states and special requirements of Arizona, Washington, and New Mexico.
